About This Group

A group for any and all GLRF members looking to participate in this annual Venice rowing event. The Vogalonga is a celebration of all people 'of the oar.' Held annually in late May or early June, the Sunday event draws upwards of 4,000 participants from around the world. The start and finish begins in the Grand Canal and follows an 18km course around all the outer islands of Venice and through the canals of Venice.. Share this group: http://thevogalonga.glrf.info

  2. There are two possibilities for rowing as a camp before or after the Vogalonga. We're floating this as an add on for people traveling a long distance and hoping to get more rowing in during their visit to Italy. There are rowing clubs in Florence which is 265 km southwest of Venice, and also a wonderful rowing location in Bled, Slovenia - see pics from the GLRF visit in June 2011. The drive to Slovenia is beautiful and takes about 3 hours. The location in Bled is all about rowing and is a favorite location for the World Rowing Championships. The one club at the lake has nothing but Filippi and Empachers. As would be expected in Europe, there are only a few 4+ and 8+ but a big fleet of 2+ and 4+. See the GLRF pics of Bled.
  3. The Vogalonga is held every year on a Sunday. Rowers and paddlers of all manner descend on Venice to join in this grand celebration that takes the flotilla procession from St. Marks Basin, north around the outer islands of Venice and back down and through the main canal. http://www.glrf.info/gotchagallery/data/thumbnails/282/Venice_grandcanal.jpg The event begins with a starting gun at 09:00h. The types of boats that participate in the celebration can vary from a one-man kayak to an 8-person inrigger rowing boat and even up to a 22-person dragon boat. The course measures approximately 30 km. and takes, for rowers, around 3 hours. http://www.glrf.info/gotchagallery/data/media/282/thevogaroute.jpg
