The Brisbane Hustlers are one of three Australian gay and inclusive rugby clubs that will travel to New Zealand next week to defend the Purchas Cup – often referred to as the Bledisloe Cup of gay rugby. The Hustlers, Sydney Convicts and Melbourne Chargers will be vying to retain the Purchas Cup, which is being hosted for the first time by Auckland-based team, the New Zealand Falcons.
Since its inception in 2004, the Purchas Cup has been a hotly contested tournament. The Cup has not previously been won by the New Zealand Falcons, who will be looking to capitalise on the recent All Blacks win against the Wallabies to secure victory against the Hustlers, as well as the Sydney Convicts and Melbourne Chargers, who will also be competing for the title.
Many players competing in the tournament have been pushed out of mainstream sport by discrimination.
“Winning the Purchas Cup last year at Queensland’s home of Rugby, Ballymore, was a momentous occasion for our club,” said a spokesperson for the Hustlers.
“Since the rebirth of the Brisbane Hustlers we have gone from strength to strength, aiming to succeed at the highest level, and being crowned Purchas Cup champions for the first time was testament to our hard work. With a new group of players, we are looking to build on that result and further establish ourselves as a force to be reckoned with.”
The 2015 Purchas Cup winner will be decided on Saturday, September 5 at Ponsonby Rugby Club in Auckland, New Zealand.
In the meantime, this weekend get yourself to Rugger Bugger on Saturday night at the Wickham Hotel. This ‘Strip Show Fundraiser’ sees the boys bare all for their club! Doors open 8pm.
