The Turkish Football Association has been fined after it sacked a referee because he is gay. Halil Ibrahim Dinçdağ (pictured) had been a referee for 13 years but was sacked after he came out in 2009.
The association had argued he was unfit for the role since he was exempt from military service on the grounds of his homosexuality.
It was fined approximately $10,800 for moral and material compensation.
Dinçdağ will appeal for their full initial demand of 110,000 Turkish Lira ($52,000).
“We are happy that justice has been done but we are going to appeal regarding the figure to be paid," his lawyer said in the Turkish media.
“Given the moral and material damages suffered, it is a small figure.”
