Brisbane’s gay and inclusive rugby union team is garnering community support as the 2015 season gets underway. Sponsored by Queensland Pride, the Hustlers are building a strong reputation in the world of gay rugby as well as in the Queensland Suburban Rugby Union, where they play in the Scotney Cup.
Last year the Hustlers beat Sydney in the national Purchas Cup, the first time they had competed in the competition.
Last year they made it to the final of the world cup of gay rugby, the Bingham Cup, losing to Sydney.
So far this year the boys had a narrow loss to Beenleigh (28-27), beat Pine Rivers (35-8), and lost to last year’s champions Goodna (34-5).
Thanks to a $9,000 grant from Brisbane City Council Councillor Vicki Howard, plus community support, the Hustlers are looking forward to helping the Qld AIDS Council raise funds, and increasing awareness of homophobia in sport in 2015.
The boys also have the next Bingham Cup in their sights – the 2016 competition will be held in Nashville, Tennessee – as well as the Purchas Cup in September.
If you want to support the Hustlers, check out their website for when and where they’re playing next and for their Trivia Night on June 6 at Lightspace from 6pm.
